Ladival Sand Sculpture

In order to illustrate the dangers of various types of UV rays, the client wanted the skin of a sand sculpture to start cracking and then crumble away.

We started with 3D scanning a woman in the desired pose with our in-house equipment and digitally sculpting her hair in a flowing, stylised way. This digital information was then used to CNC the form into a block of polystyrene, 3 times life size.

In order to get a sand sculpture texture, we covered the polystyrene in a mix of adhesive and sand. Extensive high speed testing was done to create the cracking effects and have clumps fall in a controlled manner.
