We were approached by designers Hideki Yoshimoto and Yoshinaka Ono to produce a prototype of an interior lighting system. Their concept had been chosen as one of the winners for the Lexus Design Awards 2012 and they were given a budget to present a working system at Milan Design Week 2013.

The project comprised of an array of freestanding lamps with illuminated ends shaped like ears of rice (‘inaho’ in Japanese) that slowly swayed towards people when they approached it.

The initial drawings that we received needed refining to suit the installation application, so our engineers redesigned the base unit. The light heads were 3D printed and were modified by our CAD staff to work better with the materials chosen.
