Dan Tobin Smith Letter G

Client

Dan Tobin Smith

Asylum Supervisor

Joe Yabsley

Having worked with Dan Tobin Smith on many of his projects, the acclaimed photographer tasked Asylum once again to realise his latest vision of the letter G in his ongoing Alphabetical photography series.

After receiving the design in CAD, we cleaned and modified it for fabrication. The model was offset inward and modelled out of plywood, we then rolled out sheets of clay in even thickness and covered each component entirely so that it adhered precisely to the original measurements. We then heated, smoothed and polished the surfaces by hand, and plotted supporting structures appropriately, finally assembling the whole arrangement according to the original plan.

The result is a beautiful modernist sculpture which looked to be made wholly out of clay, and when viewed directly from above, the sculpture aligns and forms the letter G.
